The Temperance Movement – Covers & Rarities

02-12-2021

The Temperance Movement are a British blues rock band formed in 2011 by Glasgow-born vocalist Phil Campbell and guitarists Luke Potashnick (ex-Rooster and Ben's Brother) and Paul Sayer. The rhythm section consists of former Jamiroquai bassist Nick Fyffe and the Australian-born drummer Damon Wilson, who has played with the likes of Ray Davies, The Waterboys and Feeder. On 10 June 2014, the Temperance Movement was invited as the guest band before the Rolling Stones' concert given in Berlin (Waldbühne). While it remains to be seen what the future holds for The Temperance Movement, "Covers & Rarities" is one of those holding operations that should come as some relief to fans, pulling together a very credible collection of unnecessarily hard- to-find tracks. In the case of The Temperance Movement, the high quality leaves you wondering why several of these 11 tracks weren't included on albums the first time round. Kicking off with a previously unreleased and absolutely stonking version of Deep Purple's 'You Fool No One', with Purple's Ian Paice knocking seven shades out of the drums (and cowbell), the covers feature first, with a particularly punchy take on Led Zeppelin's "Houses Of The Holy" coming a close second for sheer power. Of The Temperance Movement's own tunes, the dreamy 'Mother's Eyes' and Free-esque 'Turn' should never have been mere debut-album-era bonus tracks. Likewise the sparky rocker 'Centrefold' was criminally relegated to the status of a White Bear-era Deezer enticement, and the hooky, rootsy 'Do The Revelation' was available only on Spotify. Bafflingly, "Covers And Rarities" commits the same kind of crime by offering the previously unreleased and very fine 'Long Run' as a twelfth, digital-only track. Nevertheless, it's a mopping-up exercise definitely worth checking out. "We are delighted to announce our first The Temperance Movement release in over three years !" Put together with the help of guitarist and founding member Paul Sayer, "Covers & Rarities" is a treasured collection of rare and unheard gems, some of which have never been available before on CD or vinyl. Alongside The Temperance Movement's enchanting songwriting, from waltzing rock lullabies to sunbursting rock 'n' roll anthems, "Covers & Rarities" features an irresistible rendition of Deep Purple's "You Fool No One", featuring Deep Purple's very own drum virtuoso Ian Paice. This compilation journeys through various special tributes to some of Britain's all-time favourite bands and artists, including Led Zeppelin and David Bowie, all performed with the vibrant, hip-charming energy that The Temperance Movement are known and loved for.
