The Jimmie Vaughan Story

23-09-2021

Jimmie Lawrence Vaughan (born March 20, 1951) is an American blues rock guitarist and singer based in Austin, Texas. He is the older brother of the late Texas blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan. Several notable blues guitarists have had a significant influence on Vaughan's playing style including the "Three Kings" (Albert, Freddie, and B.B. King) and Johnny "Guitar" Watson. Vaughan loves classic and custom cars, and is an avid car collector. Vaughan has had many of his customs and hot rods displayed in museums, as well as featured in rodding and custom magazines. Jimmie Vaughan is a Texas blues guitarist responsible for opening up the national market for roadhouse blues and R&B during the late 20th century. With his tough, lean style, he co-led the Fabulous Thunderbirds with vocalist Kim Wilson between 1979 and 1987. In 1990, he and younger brother Stevie Ray Vaughan cut "Family Style". He launched his solo career with 1994's "Strange Pleasure". Vaughan delivered "Out There" in 1998 and "Do You Get the Blues ?" in 2001, his best-seller from the era. Vaughan recorded 2007's "On the Jimmy Reed Highway" with Omar Kent Dykes, and 2009's "Blues Stop Knockin'" with Lazy Lester. The best-selling "Plays Blues, Ballads & Favorites" appeared in 2010, followed by "Plays More Blues, Ballads and Favorites", co-credited to singer Lou Ann Barton. Vaughan returned to recording with 2019's hit "Baby Please Come Home". In 2021, a multi-disc box set, "The Jimmie Vaughan Story", was released to commemorate his 70th birthday. To commemorate his 70th birthday, Last Music Co. released "The Jimmie Vaughan Story", a handsomely designed and illustrated 12" x 12" box set that included five CDs filled with archival material, including 29 unreleased trsacks, a 12" vinyl LP of "Do You Get the Blues", two 7" singles, and a hardbound book complete with an autobiography, dozens of rare photos, and a special issue of Rodder's Journal that featured the guitarist and his car collection on the cover. The guitarists in the pantheon of blues players reads like a 'Who's Who' of the world's finest musicians, and for the past 50-plus years one of those people has been Jimmie Vaughan. The guitarist fell in love with that most moving of styles when he was still a young teenager in early 1960s Dallas, Texas, and while it took him a few years to find a true home for what he heard in his head and felt in his heart, once he got to Austin in 1969 and found some fellow blues lovers, he set off on a journey that still continues, playing the blues whenever and however he hears it. The man has spent countless years treating the blues with full respect. The Last Music Co.'s guiding light Malcolm Mills took on the mission a few years ago to create "The Jimmie Vaughan Story", a five-CD box set that captures Vaughan's blues journey, starting with some of his earliest recordings from the mid-1960s and continuing all the way to his most recent in the 2020s. The result is a stunning collection of not only music, but really Vaughan's history, on the record and in person. From early bands Storm through the Fabulous Thunderbirds, including previously unreleased recordings with producers Joel Dorn and Doc Pomus; Jimmie's collaboration with brother Stevie Ray Vaughan on 1990's award-winning "Family Style" album; and into the past 30 years of duets, shared albums and solo releases featuring a divergence of styles, the box showcases Jimmie's take on the blues. Jimmie Vaughan built a world of blues from the only sound that completely captured him as a very young Texan. He is often seen as being in a party of one in this pursuit, and he wouldn't have it any other way. Along with all the powerful music and newly discovered recordings on "The Jimmie Vaughan Story", there is a treasure trove of never-before-seen photos and writings in the gorgeous book included in the set. There are images of the Vaughan family, including childhood photos of Jimmie, Stevie and their parents, and a bonanza of photos that illustrate, tour-guide-like, Jimmie's entire career, from childhood onward to today. Among the writings is an interview from the 1978 Austin Sun, considered to be the first Jimmie Vaughan ever did, along with an essay by journalist and record producer Bill Bentley, and Jimmie's life story in his own words: a lifetime of memories, historical occurrences and family insights, all shared now for the first time. "The Jimmie Vaughan Story" is a unique collection of music, words, and images, the kind of release that can only come based on a life of belief in the blues. It has given Vaughan an ability to take the music he loves so much on a worldwide journey of discovery, and one he is devoted to sharing with others. Listen, see and read how he's lived it, and where it might be going. At 70, guitarist Jimmie Vaughan is a living link in the Texas blues legacy chain that also gave us T-Bone Walker, Lightning Hopkins, Albert Collins, Freddie King, Zuzu Bollin, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Johnny Copeland, and Jimmie's younger brother, Stevie Ray Vaughan. Jimmie arrived in Austin from Dallas in the late 1960s. He developed an original playing style that relies more on feel, groove, and swing than flash. The Jimmie Vaughan Story, curated by Last Music Co.'s Malcolm Mills, contains 96 tracks spanning five discs with more than six hours of music; 29 selections are previously unissued. The lion's share of the material on the first two discs is drawn from Vaughan's influential tenure with the Fabulous Thunderbirds between 1979 and 1989, alongside vocalist/harmonicist Kim Wilson, bassist Keith Ferguson, and drummers Mike Buck or Fran Christina. Disc one's 27 tracks are drawn from the band's first seven albums on the Benchmark, Chrysalis, and Epic labels, from 1979's "Girls Go Wild" through 1989's "Powerful Stuff". It's essentially a fine best-of containing all the hits and near misses including "She's Tuff," "How Do You Spell Love ?," "Wrap It Up," and more. Disc two kicks off with four unreleased 1979 T-Birds cuts co-produced by Doc Pomus and Joel Dorn. Also included are five previously unreleased tunes from a 1979 Antone's performance and late catalog tracks. It also reveals the beginning of Vaughan's solo career with "Cold, Cold, Feelin'" with Albert Collins, and "You're Sweet" with Jimmy Rogers. It concludes with two tracks from the Vaughan Brothers 1990 album, "Family Style". Disc three contains tracks from Vaughan's early solo outings such as 1994's "Strange Pleasure" and 1998's "Out There", compilation and soundtrack material, and guest spots on albums by Doyle Bramhall, Bo Diddley, Lou Ann Barton, and others. Its closing jam is 1995's unreleased "I Don't Live Here Anymore" with Delbert McClinton. Disc four offers tunes from Vaughan's later solo outings such as "Plays Blues, Ballads & Favorites", and collaborations with legends including John Lee Hooker, Lazy Lester, James Cotton, Susan Tedeschi, and Charlie Musselwhite. Among its highlights is the previously unreleased "What Am I Living For ?" with longtime collaborator Barton. The final disc here includes live, studio, and guest spots, and three unissued cuts with Vaughan's pre-Thunderbirds band, Storm. The highlights include a scorching "The Pleasure's All Mine" with Bonnie Raitt and "Wine Wine, Wine" with Billy Gibbons. The 12" x 12" box also includes two 7" singles, a vinyl copy of 2001's "Do You Get the Blues ?", a hand-signed cover placard, and an issue of Rodder's Journal featuring Vaughan's car collection. In a slipcase with the discs is a hardbound book containing dozens of rare photos, a long autobiographical essay by Vaughan, and another essay by Bill Bentley. The Jimmie Vaughan Story is an historic document: It offers a detailed view of the guitarist's long career as a sideman who emerged as a truly original stylist, and provides an intimate, first-person overview of the Texas blues scene during a seminal period.
