R.L. Boyce & Band Of Heysek Feat. Kenny Brown – Juke My Joint

R.L. Boyce (born August 15, 1955) is a Grammy nominated American blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist born and raised in Como, Mississippi, United States. He is a protege of Hill country blues musicians including R.L. Burnside, and Mississippi Fred McDowell. Boyce began his career in the early 1960s playing drums for his uncle, the fife and drum performer Othar Turner. Later he was the drummer for Jessie Mae Hemphill. Band Of Heysek (BOH) is an enterprising Czech blues rock trio that already released albums in 2017 and 2019, but it is mainly R.L. Boyce from Como, Mississippi who compels us to review here. BOH already toured America in 2018, and made all kinds of contacts there that made them decide to organize a recording session together with RL Boyce (guitar, vocals) and Kenny Brown (guitar, slide guitar) in the heart of the blues: Mississippi. RL Boyce disregarded all of BOH's prepared ideas and went his own way, so that eight hours later this completely improvised album was born. Boyce evokes memories of John Lee Hooker's boogie and Fred McDowell's intimacy. He has that specific pitiful singing style that we also know from Skip James, albeit with a lower voice. The spontaneity of these eight analogue recorded tracks is striking, blues pur sang, by far BOH's best act to date. "Juke My Joint" is an album by Band Of Heysek Feat. R.L. Boyce & Kenny Brown from 2020 and released under the Indies Scope label.
