Dan Sartain – Arise, Dan Sartain, Arise!

Daniel Fredrick Sartain (August 13, 1981 - March 20, 2021) was an American musician. His music encompasses a variety of genres, including rockabilly, punk rock and the blues. After releasing two self-produced albums through independent record labels, in 2005 Sartain released "Dan Sartain vs. the Serpientes", his first commercially-available studio album, through the San Diego, California-based Swami Records. This was followed by "Join Dan Sartain" in 2006. In 2007 he toured as an opening act for The White Stripes and The Hives, releasing a new single on Jack White's Third Man Records entitled "Bohemian Grove". In 2010 Sartain released his fifth album, "Dan Sartain Lives". His single "Walk Among the Cobras Pt.1" can be heard in the "Russell episode" of the video game "The Walking Dead : 400 Days". Sartain died on March 20, 2021, at the age of 39. While Sartain was frequently described as a rockabilly musician, he had a combative relationship with that genre and its surrounding subculture. He once got kicked off a tour opening for Reverend Horton Heat and gave a subsequent interview outlining his issues with the violence and lack of diversity at those shows. "We hated it," he said. "These people say it's a lifestyle. What does that mean? Does it mean they pick their teeth with switchblades ? It's 2012." In 2007, Sartain opened for the White Stripes. "Touring with the White Stripes was my Rocky Balboa moment," he told Music Mecca in an interview last year. "I was a virtually unknown barroom singer, and I went the distance with the champ. I don't feel like I'm cut out for stadium touring, but there were a few times where we got some good licks in." Dan Sartain, the Alabama-based garage rock singer-songwriter, died on Saturday, March 20, 2021. A cause of death has not been revealed. He was 39 years old. An underground rock mainstay whose eclectic repertoire encompassed garage rock, rockabilly, blues, punk, pop, and electronics, Dan Sartain was a vocalist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist whose music was rooted in a love of rock & roll's past while also reflecting a present-day mindset. Sartain first earned an audience as the garage rock revival of the 2000s was in full swing and his music appealed to garage fans, but he was never meant to be strictly confined to that genre. Everything from mariachi music, TV western theme songs, and kitschy jazz informed his music along with rock of the '50s and '60s, while the influence of Suicide and the Ramones would play a major role in his latter-day work. 2003's "Dan Sartain vs. The Serpientes" was his breakthrough album and a potent introduction to his approach, 2012's "Too Tough to Live" was a joyous, head-long dive into classic pogo punk, and 2016's "Century Plaza" found him experimenting with the cold, stark sounds of vintage synthesizers. There's a new album by late Alabama artist Dan Sartain, who died in March at 39. It's titled "Arise, Dan Sartain, Arise" and it's out November 26 via One Little Independent. Proceeds from the album go to a trust for Sartain's daughter. Last spring, Sartain had released Western Hills, a collection of his takes on themes songs from television Westerns. He followed it a few months later with another single titled "Where Is Candyman," a collaboration with Ganxta Nip that benefited the Black Lives Matter Global Network. " "At the request of Dan's family, wife and daughter, we are releasing this album which Dan finished a few months before his death on 20th March 2021. 100% of all the profits from this release, both the artists share and the record company share, are being paid into a trust fund for Dan's young daughter. It has been released as Dan intended, nothing has been changed."
