Boogie Beasts – Love Me Some

Boogie Beasts is a Belgian alternative blues band from Limburg and Liège. The band was founded in 2011 and mixes blues and boogie with rock and garage rock. Dirty beats, hypnotising slide, screaming harmonica riffs and plenty of fuzz : all of these will be served by this four-men band from Liège-Limburg-Namur, Belgium. Boogie Beasts translate their passion for (hill country) blues into a most characteristic sound of their own, which has a touch of The Black Keys jamming with John Lee Hooker at a rave in the wee hours of the morning, or Morphine on a psychedelic trip with Little Walter, or even RL Burnside backed up by the young Rolling Stones at a juke joint-gig. The drive is infectious, the noise is pure filth, yet highly irresistible. The Belgian rockers of Boogie Beasts have released their third full-length album. On "Love Me Some" they pick up where they left off last time, with solid rocking swamp blues and sometimes surprisingly poppy lines. In a line-up with two guitarists, a harmonica player and a drummer, they provide a surprisingly accessible sound in short songs full of gritty guitars and harmonica. The descriptions they use for their music refer to The Black Keys jamming with John Lee Hooker or Morphine with Little Walter and that sounds surprisingly logical when you listen to the album. The swamp blues is never far away through the guitars and harmonica, but the songs, the vocals and the drums often take it into a much more modern and poppy corner. Just listen to the hi-hat that in 'Bring It On' suddenly evokes associations with disco halfway through, the drum part in 'Get Me Out Of Here' or 'A Girl Like You'. The songs are all short and pointed. A roaring riff, a catchy vocal line and after less than 4 minutes, and usually a lot shorter, it's already over. But in the meantime, one nice tune after another comes along where the harmonica often has the role that many other bands have for a lead guitar: the constant coloring of the riff, the decorations in the verses and here and there a kind of mini solo. . Its strong point lies in the fact that the tracks are so short. It grunts nicely and before it can get stuck in the swamp, another nice track comes along. Sometimes you shouldn't make it too complicated. The Boogie Beasts have it all figured out. Pure and unadulterated top Garage Rock/Blues from Belgian soil. We had been looking forward to what we would hear on their third album for a while. After Come And Get Me and Deep, it is now time for the album Love Me Some. Get your chest wet because Belgium is back on the GarageRock/Blues map !!! Boogie Beasts released the single 'Bring It On' on the occasion of their 10th anniversary. A tasty, raw garage blues song spiced up with naughty ooh oohs by Rijkje Crommen. The song 'I Don't Care' also shows that the band has made a growth spurt, a mature sound that asks for more. Luckily their new album is full of them. When the band started 'Favorite Scen'e, they had in mind a sort of The Rolling Stones meets Canned Head vibe. However, it has become a fiery, sensual song that will be played many times. 'Get Away' gently takes you on a journey and makes you long to reach the final destination. Feel free to let yourself be transported with this love song, although it is difficult to dance on one tile with 'The One'. A nice garage rock song is 'Run You Down', a bluesy atmosphere blows through this song like a gentle breeze. Turn up the volume a bit more because with 'Get Me Out Of Here' and 'Like A Snake' the tempo goes up quite a bit. 'In Your Hands' sounds a lot quieter, but if you have to give your loved one time, you better not do it too great. You immediately feel the vibes when 'A Girl Like You' starts, also the small subtle tempo changes make this one hell of a song. A soft voice that takes on the now and then howling harmonica, you get a play between vocals and instruments while listening to 'Howl'. Fuck, unfortunately already arrived at the last song. We close the album with 'Mine All Mine'. The pleasure is all mine, but we certainly also thank you for this strong album ! It's great to experience how a partly Limburg band continues to grow and slowly and very confidently continues its musical journey across the national borders. The Boogie Beasts have been doing this since their debut album "Come and Get Me" (2015) and "Deep" (2019), of which we remember the pre-release party in the Mod in Hasselt, Belgium. Songs like "Calling My Name" and "Shake'em", which are often played during their performances, have become "almost" classics for many fans. Despite the difficult Covid-19 months, BB managed to record and release a third studio album. In the past week Naked - "introduced" with a third single "Like a Snake" - released studio album #3 : "Love Me Some". Perhaps surprising for some after hearing it, for others still very familiar. The fact that Boogie Beasts is a Belgian roots band pur sang is apparent from the line-up of the band, which changed at the end of 2019 because guitarist/singer Mathias Dalle left the group, but still keeps the two parts of the country in balance: newcomer Patrick Louis (guitar , vocals) & Fabian Benardo (harmonica) come from the provinces of Namur and Liège and Jan Jaspers (guitar, vocals) & Gert Servaes (drums) from Limburg, which already, after their first jam session in De Blauwe Kater in Leuven, 10 years does not cause any further community problems. Previous musical escapades have been mentioned in various formats in the Walloon and Flemish Regions. The common thread in the BB story is Houthalenaar Jan Jaspers. We have to go back to 1999, to the first performance of High Five Jive during the Swing -Blues for the People- Festival in Wespelaar. Swing remains important in Jaspers' musical career. Because, what happens when Henk van der Sypt (Last Call) and Filip Casteels (El Fish) join forces to exclusively bring covers of blues classics? Then those classics become psychedelic delicacies and the band is called Dizzy Dimples (Jan Jaspers: vocals, guitar - Filip Casteels: guitar - Henk Van der Sypt: harmonica - Bart Lievens: bass & Gert Servaes: drums). In 2002 Jaspers is back on Swing with the Dizzy Dimples. In 2004 the line-up changes and the new name of Jaspers' band becomes Voodoo Boogie, with two veterans (Jan Jaspers and Gert Servaes) and with bassist Rob Vanspauwen and keyboardist Wouter Haest (piano, Rhodes, Hammond). They will perform their first public performance in Houthalen, during their "own" Blues In Bloom. On 20/10/2013 Voodoo Boogie played their (for now) last show in the 'Blauwe Kater', with the original line up one more time. We see Jan Jaspers together with Henk Van der Sypt again during Swing 2013 as The John Henry Orchestra, an occasional side project of both, in order not to always have the bows too tense. The circle closes (for the time being) when the Blues in Bloom Revival is organized at the De Plas recreation park in Houthalen in September 2018, where, in addition to Blues Lee, the original High Five Jive line-up will also perform once. Or is this also a provisional last performance? Who knows?... Bernardo and Dalle were in Stinky Lou & the Goon Mat. They were great every time at the Kwadendamme Blues Festival, in the Dutch province of Zeeland, where they already played several times. Mat "The Goon" Dalle (vocals, guitar) and Fabian "Lord" Benardo (harmonica) played their last show with Stinky Lou on 23/01/2010. In 2018, both gentlemen and producer Jim Diamond (The White Stripes, Sonics, The Dirtbombs, The Devils) released their debut album "Take Of Your Clothes" as a duo with the legendary Voodoo Rhythm Records.
