Bob Stroger & The Headcutters – That's My Name

16-04-2022

Bob Stroger (born December 27, 1930) is an American electric blues bass guitarist, singer and songwriter. He has worked with many blues musicians, including Eddie King, Otis Rush, Jimmy Rogers, Eddie Taylor, Eddy Clearwater, Sunnyland Slim, Louisiana Red, Buster Benton, Homesick James, Mississippi Heat, Snooky Pryor, Odie Payne, Fred Below, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, and Billy Davenport. Bassist and vocalist Bob Stroger is now 90 years old but is still very active on the blues front. In his long career he played in the bands of Otis Rush, Willie Mabon, Eddie Taylor, Carey Bell, Snooky Pryor, Louisiana Red, Sunnyland Slim and Buster Benton. On his new album Bob is accompanied by the Brazilian band The Headcutters. And that turns out to be a fine band in which the raw harmonica of Joe Marhofer stands out in particular. This album is full of wonderful "old-fashioned" blues in which there is no trace of blues rock. Bob opens his album very relaxed with 'What Goes On In The Dark'. Warmly swaying with Bob's lazy, lived-in vocals, the raw, abrasive harmonica of Joe Marhofer and the smoothly swinging organ of guest player Luciano Leaes. 'Just A Bad Boy' is then a pleasantly pumping shuffle with again a leading role for the harmonica next to the raspy guitar of Ricardo Maca. 'I'm A Busy Man' is a dark reverberating slow blues in which the ghost of Peter Green haunts. Bob can still funk too. This is evident from the lightly grooving 'Come On Home'. A song in the best Tramp tradition. The slow blues 'Stranded In St. Louis' makes a big impression, partly due to the excellent playing of The Headcutters. In the energetically pumping 'That's My Name' Bob lets us know: "You can call me Bob Stroger but my real name is the blues." And he is absolutely right because on this album Bob Stroger shows all his experience in a very pleasant way. I am curious if we will hear more from The Headcutters because this is a very nice band ! 2022 Release. Ninety-year - old "Sir "Bob Stroger, 'Lord Of The Blues', has had a glorious musical career and played with the greatest. He has appeared on more than 30 Delmark releases. "That's My Name" by Bob Stroger & The Headcutters marks his rst Delmark album as a leader. The Headcutters are a crack blues quartet hailing from Brazil, and they are a welcome addition to the Delmark family.
